Energy sector in the U.K. plays a vital role in growth of the economy by producing, transforming and supplying energy, in its various forms, to all other sectors. The U.K. is the largest producer of oil and natural gas in the EU.
The U.K. is among the few OECD countries that is a major energy importer. During 2009, natural gas recorded the highest consumption among all types of energy sources. Consumption of natural gas was around 37.93%, while that of crude oil and petroleum products was around 35.57%, solid fuels accounted for around 18.55% and nuclear energy accounted for 5.41%.Other sources like renewable energy accounted for 2.53% of the primary energy consumed.
